Flint Urban Safety Corps
 
 
 
Flint’s Urban Safety Corps is seeking to fill full-time and half-time AmeriCorps member positions. The Urban Safety Corps is located on the University of Michigan-Flint campus, with program oversight provided by the Department of Public Safety for UM-Flint and the United Way of Genesee County. The program is working to implement initiatives to increase public safety by decreasing victimization and increasing community in the University Avenue Corridor, College Cultural neighborhood, downtown and other Flint neighborhoods. The interventions employed by the Program are intended to reduce blight, support community by promoting communication among residents/organizations and engage volunteers from across the greater Flint area to stimulate not only community service, but national service as well.

Member Duties : Members who serve with the Flint Urban Safety Corps work with residents from the target area to create block clubs, community patrol groups, tenant organizations, business associations and other community organizations. Members also board up vacant and open properties, assist in creating safe pathways for students traveling to and from school and implement crime prevention strategies among other tasks. Members work in conjunction with community organizations including community development corporations, church groups, police precincts, student organizations and others to promote collaboration in problem solving for the target area. In addition, members are responsible for planning and executing a number of both small and large scale events that support and further the Program’s mission; these events range anywhere from neighborhood block parties to signature service projects.
