I Have a Dream Foundation

Each of “I Have a Dream’s” youth—which we call Dreamers—receives 10-plus years of programming, from second grade through high school graduation and then college. Activities consist of: academic tutoring and after-school programs, mentoring, enrichment and social activities, summer programming, college & career readiness support, and a post-secondary scholarship. All students served are low-income, and although “I Have a Dream” does not target a specific ethnicity, most of its Dreamers (86%) are Latino. Low-income youth are at a severe disadvantage academically; many of these students face language and cultural barriers to education, so they are at greater risk of dropping out of high school. In St. Vrain Valley and Boulder Valley school districts, 15,315 students qualify for the Free & Reduced Lunch program. In 2014, 75% of these low-income students graduated high school; in contrast, “I Have a Dream” consistently graduates 90% of its students. Since 1990, when “I Have a Dream” started with one class of 36 students, it’s launched 15 classes serving a total 780 Dreamers, reaching family members and guest participants (Dreamer’s friends and siblings) to impact over 3,000 people. “I Have a Dream’s” program currently operates in seven learning centers throughout Boulder County located at either the student’s school or their low-income housing site in Boulder, Longmont, and Lafayette. The Weld County class will be an expansion of its services. This class will provide at-risk and under-served youth at Thunder Valley K-8 school with drop-out prevention programming, including: academic tutoring and programming, mentoring, enrichment and social activities, a post-secondary scholarship, and college & career readiness programming.
