*BMVP-Increasing Access to Child Abuse Prevention Services

The Family Tree Center is committed to the prevention of all types of child abuse and neglect in Yellowstone County and the surrounding area. Every child deserves the best possible start in life and every family needs support - which is most effective in early childhood. Violence needs to be addressed within every level of society and early intervention prevents costly future interventions. Children experiencing poverty are more likely to be abused, perform poorly in school, and have significantly higher psychosocial difficulties which impair long-term success. Higher poverty concentrations are associated with increased child abuse fatality rates. The most frequent primary factor in child protection cases is parental addiction. Approximately 75 percent of local child abuse cases involve parents abusing drugs other than alcohol. Half of the cases involve methamphetamine addiction and a quarter involve other drugs such as opiates, and prescription medications. In 2016, 531 children were served through the Yellowstone County court system due to abuse and neglect; the majority of these children come from families living below the poverty level. In 2017, there were 755 cases of child abuse and neglect in Yellowstone County. Nearly 25 percent of all child protection cases in Montana are filed in Yellowstone County. The expansion of prevention services is expected to result in healthier children, parents and families and will also enhance childhood performance in school. Health services include family classes as an effective family therapy model with guided interaction and experiential activities. Child abuse prevention training and workshops can also be provided to parents, childcare workers, and others. This project will help alleviate poverty by connecting people with health and mental health services to help children and parents achieve health and success in school, work, and life.
