BMVP - Money is Power: Expanding Financial Literacy!

The mission of NeighborWorks Montana is to create opportunities for families and individuals to live in affordable homes in strong communities. HRDC empowers people in need through mobilizing and developing community resources by creating opportunities for success. The Home Center of Billings, Montana furthers equal access to affordable, sustainable and healthy housing. Research shows that the United States population has low levels of economic and financial literacy, especially among young people; when 1,000 individuals between the ages of 18 and 97 were given a 28-question true/false quiz regarding financial literacy, respondents were only able to answer two-thirds of the questions correctly. Increasing financial literacy results in improved savings outcomes and heightened financial and economic success. As families learn how to budget and spend within their means, poverty is alleviated through more efficient use of household income to meet basic needs first, followed by financial planning to meet other, less essential needs. This project will increase service access by adding a financial literacy curriculum and course through the Home Center. Clients served through the new financial literacy program will have increased knowledge and will be able to more effectively manage funding levels to establish and maintain future savings accounts.
