UWCCR Community Impact

Our programs take a holistic approach to partnering with our schools using the community to address barriers to best educating all our children. We connect families with community resources that support the child's success in the classroom. Currently, we have the following programs: • KinderCamp- In collaboration with schools and non-profits, United Way has taken lead in a summer program for incoming kindergartners who have had little to no preschool experience. • Woodland KIDS Read- A community celebration of reading where 1st graders visit our local community college engaging with a professional storyteller, reading with local business professionals and community leaders . • Read To Succeed Tutors- We recruit and train volunteers to work with students on reading skills in local elementary school. • Imagination Library- A book gifting program that mails free books to children every month until they are 5 years old. New to our work is a coalition focused on building Resiliency. This community-building framework creates a community conversation in ACEs and Resilience, aiming to embed their principles into action through its multiple partners, agencies and organizations. ACEs are Adverse Childhood Experiences traumatic events and experiences that occur early in life and have an impact on the health and social-emotional well-being throughout the lifespan. Examples of traumatic events include physical and sexual abuse, neglect, loss of a parent due to death, abandonment, incarceration or divorce, and exposure to violence and substance use. Resilience is the ability to adapt well, or “bounce back” in the presence of difficult life events. The single most important factor in developing resilience in children is to have a stable and committed relationship with a supportive parent, caregiver, or other adult. People who have strong connections with family and friends and close social supports are better able to get help during difficult times.
