UWCCR Sacramento Self Help Housing - Community Organizer

The VISTA will assist in creating new HART groups as well as sustain existing HARTs. HART (Homeless Assistance Resources Teams) exist in 9 areas in the Sacramento region; Elk Grove, Citrus Heights, Arden-Arcade, Carmichael, Rancho Cordova, Folsom, North Sac, South Sac and Midtown. Our agency, Sacramento Self Help Housing is contracted by the cities of Elk Grove, Rancho Cordova, Folsom, and Citrus Heights to provide housing outreach workers for the homeless and low income citizens in those communities. It has been a great help to build up partner HARTS to assist and work with the homeless. To start a HART group we contact local Church and civic leaders and look for individuals who have a desire to solve the homeless problem in their community. Local food banks, charitable organizations, are also contacted as well as the school district homeless liaisons. From this we build our core group. Once a HART group is formed they need continuing support from our agency. The VISTA will work with the Outreach Coordinator in providing this assistance to already existing groups as well as form new groups. Self Help Housing provides professional advice and support to each HART group for them to decide on what is best for their community. There will be opportunities to write grants for funds to assist our HART projects. Self Help Housing also assists with the Winter Shelters established by the local HART groups. It is an opportunity that will provide the VISTA invaluable experience with community groups, building relationships with volunteers, civic leaders, city officials and the homeless with the ultimate goal of housing the homeless.

Member Duties : The VISTA will be community organizing around the issue of homelessness. We organize citizens into HART groups that our agency partners with to provide services for the homeless. We build new HART groups as well as assist the 9 existing HARTs. These HART groups are dedicated to effect local change in assisting the homeless. The VISTA will assist in building up these groups and starting new HART groups. The VISTA will also assist with managing other volunteers at the agency and possibly assist with grant writing for these programs. Some advocacy for the homeless will also be a possibility. These groups are very collaborative and work together as we as work with other groups and agencies that provide homeless services. There are a lot of learning and growth opportunities associated with this position. There will be opportunities to lead and create new projects within the HART framework; homeless youth, etc.
