Neighborhood Engagement Specialist

For the past 12 years, IndyEast residents, along with major local institutions and community partners have worked together to create a new story for the Near Eastside of Indianapolis – a neighborhood where residents choose to live, work and play. The ambitious, resident-created Quality of Life Plan leverages local, federal and private investment in the neighborhood to achieve over 150 objectives. As a long-standing institution, the John Boner Neighborhood Centers (JBNC) has been a leader in coordinating these efforts, supporting and building capacity, and seeking financial resources for the Near Eastside. The recent federal Promise Zone designation builds on the accomplishments of the JBNC and its ten implementation partners, setting and achieving goals in a methodically developed plan. Promise Zone designations allow high-poverty but high-capacity communities to partner with the federal government to achieve these goals. The Promise Zone designation does not come with any funding, but rather a package of benefits to designated areas. These benefits include access to priority points when requesting federal funding, a dedicated liaison to different federal government agencies, and five VISTA members to assist in completing the work. The ten-year designation advances the IndyEast neighborhood strategy to achieve five community defined goals. These are Live IndyEast (Develop Affordable Housing and Redevelopment), Work IndyEast (Create Jobs), Buy IndyEast (Increase Economic Activity), Learn IndyEast (Improve Educational Opportunities) and Safe IndyEast (Reduce Serious and Violent Crime). Each goal contains three sub-goals, along with clearly identified activities and interventions. Over the next eight years, JBNC, along with neighborhood residents and implementation partners will work to carry out the activities and interventions while leveraging new sources of federal funding opportunities.
