Building Wealth and Prosperity in Mountain View VISTA

The Anchorage Community Land Trust is a community development nonprofit organization that has been working in Anchorage, Alaska Mountain View neighborhood for a decade. ACLT redevelops blighted properties, operates community gardens, and works with residents to build a more prosperous community. Core to our work is community engagement. We believe that effective community development is directed by the community, and encompasses all aspects that make up a vibrant neighborhood. Mountain View has been identified as the most diverse neighborhood in the United States and being in Alaska presents a unique set of challenges. For this project, the VISTA will be working to implement resident-identified needs to increase job opportunities and financial stability in the community. Anchorage touts a 5% unemployment rate, but in Mountain View it is closer to 18% with the average income far below average. The VISTA volunteer will work closely with nonprofit partners, schools, and resident leaders in order to develop sustainable programs that will enhance these economic goals. Chief among these goals are encouraging local hire of residents, partnering with providers, and creating culturally-relevant financial literacy programs in order to create more opportunities for education, training, and jobs. The member with work as a team member with a small staff, attend community meetings, create outreach campaigns, and assist in building a network of supporters throughout the service term.

Member Duties : In the summer of 2018, ACLT partnered with CSS's RAISE program to construct a 28,000 square foot urban farm on land owned by ACLT. The farm is intended to be a urban agriculture space and incubator, allowing low-income community members to grow produce and sell it on site. The farm has not yet opened. The VISTA service member will work with the community and CSS to identify users of the space, create a management structure for the farm that allows for long-term sustainability, and build a pipeline connecting farmers to ACLT’s programs for low-income business owners. Specific goals include full utilization of growing space, developing agriculture-specific business programming, and assisting ACLT with planning for future infrastructure and programs on the site to grow the space and create new opportunities for Mountain View residents. The VISTA service member will help ACLT build capacity for programs that provide on-going support, education, and services to low-income entrepreneurs.
