OSMRE/VISTA Continental Divide Trail Gateway Community

The CDTC Gateway Designation Program is at a critical juncture where there are more communities desiring status and less capacity to support their needs in becoming designated communities. This mail goal of the VISTA project and partnership will be to address the capacity gap and support communities trail wide, with specific focus on supporting the community of Silver City as it defines its next phase as a CDT Gateway Community, and as it serves as a leader for other communities to follow. The VISTA will work in close partnership with the Town of Silver City Arts and Cultural District team to support the growing demands of the Gateway Community. This includes working on Tourism initiatives to redefine the identity of the community as a recreational destination versus a town defined by extractive activities. This includes supporting the CDT Advisory Committee in town made of town officials, agency partners, and community members. This group would serve to not only address critical stewardship needs of the CDT in the area, but support its annual Trail Days Event which serves as the premier event for the CDT trail-wide and “kicks off” the annual hiking season for North bound CDT users. The position would support trail wide needs in development of information resources for all users in both print and web formats, and specific community web pages to provide visitors information about the Communities themselves. The position would serve as a liaison with the local US Forest Service and BLM Offices to address CDT concerns, and would work closely with local schools on various outreach and education efforts to engage local youth in the CDT Community. Finally, this position would serve as the eyes and ears for the National offices to ensure a close knit system of communication and partnership is maintained with the CDT Community in and around Southern New Mexico. Applications are reviewed and the position will be filled on a rolling basis. Please apply early to be considered.
