Karis, Inc., is a local nonprofit in Mesa County, Colorado with a mission of helping homeless men, women, and youth who are aggressively moving towards self-sufficiency. In 2012, Karis, Inc. opened The House, A Safe Place for Western Slope Teens, to provide shelter and supportive services to homeless youth. Services at The House are based on best practices, evidence-informed approaches, the input of homeless youth, and partnerships that have seamlessly integrated services. Services include: community-wide outreach, a shelter that never closes, inviting gateway services, comprehensive assessment, intensive case management, a mentorship program, a full suite of mental health and physical health services, and aftercare services that have no end date. To date, The House has served over 180 homeless and unaccompanied youth. These youth have made major strides towards self-sufficiency and sustainability. A year after they leave The House, 95% of youth remain stably and safely housed. In addition, compared to when they enter The House, youth a year after they leave The House experience a 166% increase in their employment rate. Why work at The House? The House is a small organization where staff are always supportive of one another and where the focus is always on what is best for teens. Because our organization is small being a VISTA member at The House means that you will spend lots of time with our Executive Director who will personally help you develop. The House has a strong history of successful fundraising. The organization has received funding for over 90% of grants that it has applied for and one in every 1,500 community members in Mesa County have donated to The House in the past years. The organization is also quickly developing adding new services each month that are based on evidence informed approaches and best practices. Come learn and develop with a team of highly qualified professionals who are invested in youth development.
