*Goodwill VISTA* Catholic Charities Refugee Services

Catholic Charities Maine (CCM), is a statewide, faith-based, nonprofit organization that advances the charitable and social mission of the Catholic Church in Maine (www.ccmaine.org). CCM's Refugee and Immigration Services (RIS) has provided resettlement services to primary refugees in Maine since 1975. Realizing that many of these clients arrive in Maine with few possessions, and often have suffered trauma and loss of family members, our staff works with them to access housing, English skills, jobs, and medical and mental health services that will allow them to begin a new life here and become part of the community in which they live. Many refugees struggle with basic language acquisition upon arrival, and those who have some English skills must work to continue improving. Current populations being served by the RIS program, include a majority of Somali and Iraqi refugees, with smaller representations from mostly Central African and Middle Eastern countries.
