Coeur d’Alene – United Way of North Idaho – VISTA Leader

To help ensure that children receive resources to help them be prepared for and succeed in school, the Better Futures for Idaho Youth VISTA Project will build the capacity of areas in the state by providing parents with tools and knowledge to prepare their children for kindergarten; provide books to low-income children; and engage the community through awareness campaigns regarding families dealing with homelessness and food insecurity. The project will also help drive a statewide volunteer initiative to help build capacity of nonprofit organizations and promote community service. This AmeriCorps VISTA Project involves multiple organizations in several communities across the state of Idaho. As a collaborative effort of several United Ways and other agencies, the project will encompass roles alleviating poverty through literacy programs, community awareness and volunteer resources for nonprofits. The VISTAs assigned to areas focused on Literacy will revolve around Kindergarten readiness and access to books and reading opportunities. VISTAs working on Healthy Futures will address food insecurity issues; and leveling the learning opportunities for homeless students through volunteer training. Capacity Building VISTAs will work to develop and promote VolunteerUnited.org to engage Idahoans in volunteerism. Finally, the VISTA Leader will focus on evaluating and developing resources to be made available to project sites. The VISTA Leader will be working at United Way of North Idaho, in downtown Coeur d’Alene. The Leader will work closely with Project sites as well as other nonprofit organizations in the five northern counties. In addition to United Way, project sites include the Coeur d’Alene School District, Family Promise of the Palouse (Moscow), Gizmo-CdA, Children's Village (CdA), United Way of Southeastern Idaho (Pocatello), Human Rights Education Institute (CdA), and United Way of Idaho Falls and Bonneville (Idaho Falls).
