AmeriCorps VISTA Restorative Strategies

Over half of the 42,000 students enrolled in Sarasota County Schools come from low income families, yet they make up 63 percent of suspensions. Students who misbehave in school generally do not have a positive sense of school affiliation or engagement. Restorative strategies help students re-engage with school and build positive relationships, while developing a stronger sense of empathy. Through restorative practices, students learn how their actions affect others while providing them with the tools they need to resolve conflicts, communicate with peers and self-regulate their behavior. The AmeriCorps VISTA Restorative Strategies Coordinators will work with district staff to become experts and leaders in restorative strategies and will build capacity throughout the district. This will be accomplished as AmeriCorps VISTA members develop curricula and lesson plans, train teachers and other school- and district-based staff, support school staff in restorative practices implementation, and build community partnerships. Students will stay engaged in school, continue to learn, and graduate high school, leading them out of poverty. In the first year of implementation, beginning in July 2015, AmeriCorps VISTA Restorative Strategies Coordinators will gain enough knowledge about Sarasota schools, their students and needs, while becoming restorative strategies leaders in the district’s efforts to expand and deepen the use of restorative interventions. By developing lessons and curricula, training and supporting staff, and building community partnerships, at least 500 students will demonstrate improved academic engagement as measured by school records and/or student pre/post surveys.
