SOTS - Resource Development at Ute Mountain Tribal Court

This AmeriCorps VISTA, serving with Spirit of the Sun (SOTS), will be placed with the tribal courts department on the Ute Mountain Reservation in Southwest Colorado. SOTS is a nonprofit based in Louisville, Colorado that works on community and economic development projects nationwide with tribes and tribal organizations. SOTS's mission is to strengthen and improve tribal economies and Native American communities, promoting the long-term vitality and well-being of American Indians and the communities in which they live. Working with the tribal court, this VISTA will focus on decreasing instances of juvenile truancy and delinquency, and increasing cultural competency of foster homes to better care for native youth. After becoming familiar with current programming and laws, this VISTA will identify areas in need of improvement, then work to implement new and/or improved programming. The position will also include some fundraising and grant writing. VISTAs serving at this location will have a wonderful opportunity to be immersed in another culture and to enjoy to beautiful four corners area. Keep in mind that this is a very rural area and VISTAs need to find their own housing and have their own transportation to get to and from work.
