Kindergarten Readiness Coordinator- West Central

The mission of the West Central Community Center (WCCC) is to provide health, education, recreation and enrichment resources to individuals, children and families in the community. The core beliefs are Respect, Empower, Advocate, Compassion, and Hope. The primary focus area for this project is Education, specifically School Readiness. The goal is to develop capacity so that partners can provide support and facilitate access to services and resources for low income families of the West Central neighborhood that would contribute to improved educational outcomes for low-income youth. The goal is to increase the number of children in West Central who are assessed as kindergarten ready by 10% each year, for the three year project, through 2020. The Spokane County cradle to career educational partnership, Excelerate Success, has identified kindergarten readiness as a community priority. Less than 50% of children enter kindergarten assessed as ready in the county. Currently only 18% of children who entered kindergarten classes located in the West Central community at Holmes Elementary School in 2013 were assessed as "ready" in all six domains based on the Washington Kindergarten Inventory of Developing Skills (WaKIDS) assessment. Additionally there are high rates of free and reduced lunches (90%), high kindergarten enrollment (75 students) and low WaKIDS scores. The poverty rate for people living in West Central is between 46.6 -60.3% (Spokane Regional Health District Odds Against Tomorrow Report)
