Macdonald Center – Community Coalition for Social Isolation

This position joins the Oregon Health Authority’s statewide VISTA team. In addition to activities at your individual site, each member receives additional orientation, training throughout the year, team retreats and meetings, and the support of the team leaders and project director based at the state public health agency. For more information about the Oregon Health Authority VISTA Partnership Program, please visit: http://go.usa.gov/39Vd5 Macdonald Center’s mission is to nurture the mind, body and spirit of the underserved community members of old town-downtown Portland by building connections and community. They face tough challenges such as severe lack of resources, chronic mental illness, drug or alcohol addiction, physical disabilities, social isolation, and criminal histories. Many people live alone in small single room occupancy hotels and low-income apartment buildings, which limit opportunity for social interaction and can feel physically confining, heightening the isolation. Macdonald Center focuses on breaking social isolation through building genuine, caring, mutual relationships with those we serve. Through our visitation program, members can choose to receive visits in their homes or participate in social activities such as field trips, birthday parties, fellowship, movies, and games. Relationships of care are built not just between staff and members, but among the members themselves. The Center also provides immersion opportunities for nursing, medical, pharmacy and dental students. The position will be in Portland, Oregon’s cultural center, dense with independent movie theaters and art galleries. The exceptional public transit system makes it easy to get around, no matter if you’re visiting a food cart pod or a public park. It’s a quick drive to the coast, Mt Hood, or Columbia River Gorge. With the innovative public health work happening here, it is a wonderful place to explore a future in public health. Transit pass for bus and rail provided.
