Multnomah County Health Department Maternal and Child Health

This position joins the Oregon Health Authority’s statewide VISTA team. In addition to activities at your individual site, each member receives additional orientation, training throughout the year, team retreats and meetings, and the support of the team leaders and project director based at the state public health agency. For more information about the Oregon Health Authority VISTA Partnership Program, please visit: http://go.usa.gov/39Vd5 This VISTA will serve at the Multnomah County Health Department, which has a range of early childhood and family programs that this position will collaborate with. Two main partner programs are the Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) program and the Right from the Start Coalition (RFTS) in Early Childhood Services. The goal of REACH is to improve health equity for the local African-American/Black community. The work includes nutrition policies and environmental changes that will span across the life-course and reach families, youth, pregnant women, adults and elders. The REACH program is working to amplify the number of people with increased access to environments with healthy food options and increased daily consumption of fruits/vegetables. Additionally, this position will be working with the RFTS coalition which builds on the findings of the RFTS Assessment and brings together partners in child care, public health and research to collaboratively identify and implement effective strategies for promoting healthy weight in child care settings. There are two other VISTA members in the agency, which is located in Portland. Portland is Oregon’s cultural center, dense with independent movie theaters and art galleries. The exceptional public transit system makes it easy to get around the city without a car, no matter if you’re visiting a food cart pod or a public park. With the innovative public health work happening in Oregon, Portland is a wonderful place to explore a future in public health.

Member Duties : Multnomah County Health Department is increasingly focusing on ways to support and build on community capacity to impact early childhood health and education outcomes and address health inequities. In 2013, Oregon had the least affordable center-based child care. Low-income and working class families frequently choose family, friends and neighbors, as caregivers since it is often free or low-cost and offered during nontraditional work hours when regulated care is closed. The cost, cultural/linguistic specificity, and flexible hours make in-home child care settings the predominant type of care in the community and an important area for public health outreach. The VISTA will collaborate with staff in Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) and Right from the Start Coalition (RFTS) to map networks to reach friends and family caregivers; provide a review of related existing practices elsewhere; and provide a framework for a focused assessment of these providers’ needs.
