Columbia County Public Health Tobacco and Accreditation

This position joins the Oregon Health Authority’s statewide VISTA team. In addition to activities at your individual site, each member receives additional orientation, training and professional development throughout the year, team retreats and meetings, and the support of the team leaders and project director based at the state public health agency. For more information about the Oregon Health Authority VISTA Partnership Program, please visit: http://go.usa.gov/39Vd5 The Public Health Foundation of Columbia County provides health care services, offers community health education and planning activities, and conducts many other programs that fulfill the public health mission to promote, prevent and protect. Public Health in Columbia County is a private agency that provides public health services countywide, in five clinics. The clients served are primarily community members who are surviving at 175% of the federal poverty level or lower. Forty eight percent of the low income client population smoke tobacco products, constituting a major health threat to the low income population of the county. Achieving a comprehensive tobacco cessation referral system within the agency will assure that the residents accessing public health services will gain the skills to overcome addiction and resources to help them quit to develop healthy lives. Because of the organization’s key role providing public health services to so many low income clients, the process of agency accreditation and quality improvement will have far-reaching impact internally and within the community. Through the process of developing this system, the VISTA will gain significant understanding of the inner operations of a medium-sized non-profit public health agency in a rural community. Columbia County provides constant opportunities for hiking and biking on nearby Sauvie Island, exploring historical sites featured in Lewis and Clark’s journals, relaxing on the waterfront, or a quick ride to Portland.

Member Duties : Join us along the scenic Columbia River in two innovative projects: reducing tobacco use among clients and supporting national public health agency accreditation. The VISTA will be serving at the Public Health Foundation of Columbia County, the official public health agency for Columbia County, just outside Portland, Oregon. They will work side-by-side with the Tobacco Prevention and Education staff to assess current practices in each of the satellite clinics and research effective and comprehensive tobacco cessation referral procedures. The VISTA will also work with each of the clinics to implement and build a sustainable staff training plan. Simultaneously, the VISTA will coordinate national accreditation efforts for the agency. The accreditation process lets the agency demonstrate it meets national standards of service and quality improvement to best serve the low income and underserved clients.
