Serve New York 2017: Ithaca Children's Garden
Serve New York mobilizes AmeriCorps VISTA members to serve organizations, government agencies, and educational institutions focused on the needs of veteran and military families, improving and expanding educational opportunities, ensuring economic opportunity for all, and creating healthy futures for the residents of NY. The goal of Serve New York is to strengthen communities across the state and to allow organizations within them to better provide services to impoverished individuals and families. The Serve New York program has partner organizations in Buffalo, Rochester, Lyons, Ithaca, Geneva, and White Plains. While serving, members receive support from the VISTA team at The Service Collaborative of WNY, Inc. The support includes monthly training, a social network of fellow members, and daily support from VISTA leaders.

Member Duties : The Ithaca Children’s Garden (ICG) mission is to inspire, promote, and sustain youth and community stewardship of the natural environment through garden-based learning and discovery. The work that Ithaca Children’s Garden does is an especially vital resource to impart to local youth the importance of nutrition & physical activity for establishing healthy habits into adulthood, that then impact future generations. In an area such as Ithaca, where 46% of local residents live below the poverty line, providing access to healthy, nutritious food to families is of the utmost importance. In this position, the VISTA member will work alongside ICG staff to increase available funding for current and future programming through grant writing and the creation of an annual development plan, which will be used as a basis for funding sources in the years to come. In addition, the VISTA member will increase awareness and access to ICG’s programs through marketing initiatives and volunteer recruitment.
