20-21 UCA - Phoenix School Early College Mentor

Serving at Phoenix Charter School in Roseburg, Oregon, the member will mentor a cohort of 25 high school upperclassmen to best navigate Umpqua Community College as their primary place of study. The Phoenix Early College program works from our campus to partner AmeriCorps, Phoenix staff, UCC project partners, students, and ASPIRE program volunteers. The member will assist students overcome barriers such as enrollment, course selection, transportation, tutoring needs, and general first-generation to college challenges. In addition, the member will work with youth still engaged in completing high school to identify their strengths through tools such as the National Career Readiness Certification (NCRC), supporting youth and our community in developing value for the results and guiding them towards next steps of career planning, work experience and career preparation through some form of post-secondary education. The AmeriCorps member will serve as a model for recruited community volunteers who will be coordinated by the member to work in a similar capacity with youth. Our program enjoys a high success rate, celebrates its tuition-free portal to our students, and strong partnership with Umpqua Community College.
