Connecticut VISTA Summer Associate - SFSP Meals Outreach

The CT Food Justice VISTA project is a platform for partnership between UConn Extension and some of the most effective and innovative nonprofit organizations in low-income communities in Connecticut. The CT Food Justice VISTA Project seeks to build the capacity of high-impact organizations focused on community food security and food justice. With year-round VISTA Member support, project host sites commit to empowering youth and other under-represented populations to have meaningful input on food-related programs and services. Summer is a critical time for children’s academic and physical well-being. During the summer children are at a higher risk of both obesity and hunger. The federal summer meal program, called the Summer Food Services Program (SFSP), provides free summer meals for kids and can become an important source of nutritious food for children and youth during this time. Offering free, nutritious meals also provides an incentive for children to participate in summer enrichment programs, which means that children are not only well-fed, but in a safe environment engaged in academic and recreational activities. During the summer of 2016, the CT Food Justice VISTA Project will recruit and place 10 VISTA Summer Associates to serve at sites serving federally funded summer meals to school-aged children in locations throughout Connecticut
