UJA-Federation of New York’s VISTA Program Coordinator

UJA-Federation of New York is participating in a national VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) initiative. Often known as the “domestic Peace Corps,” VISTA is a national service program sponsored by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). Participants receive a modest living allowance in exchange for a one-year service commitment. VISTAs build infrastructure in nonprofit organizations, government agencies, or educational institutions to help them more effectively bring individuals and communities out of poverty or alleviate pressures associated with living in poverty. This initiative is focused on a particular population – Holocaust survivors – and aims to increase the capacity of communities throughout the country to meet their increasing needs and ensure that they can live with dignity and quality of life for as long as possible. During the one-year project (August 31, 2015 - August 31, 2016), the VISTA will bring capacity to UJA-Federation and our extended network in the area of Holocaust survivor services. Through volunteer mobilization and community engagement/outreach, he/she will be responsible for raising awareness and educating members of the community on the needs and challenges facing the large number of Holocaust survivors that live within our region. The goal of this effort is to sustain support for this population for as long as they remain alive and in need, which we estimate will remain steady through 2020 and continue to be significant in 2025.
