Samost Jewish Family & Children’s Service

Samost Jewish Family & Children’s Service (JFCS) is a non-profit social service agency located in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. For over 65 years, JFCS has been providing comprehensive, caring social services to South Jersey residents of all ages, faiths, and economic backgrounds - strengthening the individual, the family, and the community. From cradle to rocking chair, our critical services help our most vulnerable community members meet the challenges and overcome the obstacles that often arise during the course of daily living. We currently provide services to close to 80 Holocaust survivors in our community and they are a major focus for our Senior Services Department. The Goodwin Holocaust Museum and Education Center (GHMEC) has been in existence for more than 25 years. Its mission is to use the experience of the Holocaust as a vehicle for teaching young people about the past and educating them for the future. As a department of the Jewish Community Relations Council, GHMEC works closely with public, private, parochial, charter and juvenile justice schools in order to fulfill the New Jersey Department of Education’s requirement that students study the Holocaust and the lessons this tragic event imparts to current generations. During the one-year project the VISTA worker will work specifically in the area of Holocaust Survivor Services to assist our agencies in building our capacity to meet the needs of some of the most vulnerable members of our community. The Vista worker will provide research on Survivor trends and grant opportunities in order to enhance current agency programs and services. The Vista worker will educate the community on special needs of this population and recruit new volunteers and donors to support the agencies’ missions.

Member Duties : The VISTA will be responsible for conducting ongoing research into trends, programs, and innovations of agencies which provide services to Holocaust survivors across the country. The research will enable our agency’s staff to enhance current programs, services and support. Another important aspect of the research will be to disseminate the information to the community at large and educate them to the special needs of this population. The VISTA intern will subsequently develop and market fundraising efforts with specific focuses on emergency assistance support as well as other projects identified through initial research. The VISTA intern will investigate State and Private funding sources including grants, foundations and individual donor prospects.
