Strong Cities, Strong Communities - United Way of Youngstown

The Strong Cities, Strong Communities (SC2) initiative infuses resources, both federal and local, to begin creating systemic changes for communities. This White House initiative focuses on intense community research, asset building and resource development. The Youngstown initiative specifically focuses on developing a community tool box, and programming that can be utilized by neighborhood and community groups, the Youngstown City Schools, and city agencies to bring the community out of poverty.

Member Duties : The role of the VISTA member, serving with United Way of Youngstown, is focused on research and design of educational programs in the community that align with the Promise Neighborhood Initiative. This position will include researching educational and community needs, preparing an action plan for neighborhood involvement in the schools, identify programming needs that could be infused in the community. In addition to creating an action plan for this initiative, the role will include grant writing, volunteer recruitment and training and stakeholder and partner development. This effort will be focused on the Taft Elementary School neighborhood, and will include regular meetings at the school and in the neighborhood.
