Boys & Girls Clubs of Carson- College Access Liason
 
 
 
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Carson (BGCC) offers our young people a safe environment where they can have fun and be themselves, dedicated adult mentors who respect and listen to them, and outcome-based programs that empower youth to become lifelong learners. BGCC serves those who otherwise would not have opportunities for academic success, struggling students from low income, disadvantaged homes from Carson, Ca and the surrounding areas. This program focuses on middle and high school grade level students. Our goal is to make entrance into post-secondary education a reality to those who otherwise would not have the opportunity by fostering a college going culture. Members are provided with weekly college workshops, fieldtrips to colleges, one on one case management and daily tutoring. Some participants will be the first in their family to graduate from high school and are from low income families. Member Duties : This VISTA will do the following in year three: document strategies and methods that will assist the organization to remain accountable and enhance programs that help low income students prepare for, enter into, and graduate from college; professional development with staff; increase the number of Club members that prepare for and enter into college; develop, expand and strengthen relationships with colleges and universities; assist in the recruitment of volunteers for college access programming; arrange and coordinate college tours; and reevaluate 5th grade program needs. VISTA will also assist in cash for college initiatives and scholarship program coordination. The VISTA will be responsible for transferring knowledge to appropriate parties as outlined in assignment description.
