2016-17 Connecting Local Foods and Community VISTA Salmon,ID
 
 
 
These VISTAs will be working together in the community of Salmon, Idaho to enhance and build capacity in the work that the Salmon Local Foods Group collaborative has been accomplishing on a limited basis for more than 5 years. VISTA members will work in and around Salmon making local foods available to all residents, making small scale agriculture a more equitable business venture, and generally educating about growing, cooking, and preserving local foods. VISTA members will work closely with Salmon Local Foods Group as well as other VISTA members on a team within the community of Salmon, Idaho to implement nutrition and sustainable agriculture education & outreach, coordinate technical training(s), and host forums on behalf of Salmon Local Foods Group’s action plan. This member will tie together community partners in an effort to mitigate hunger among low-income families, work to bolster sustainable agriculture within the community, and educate about food safety and value-added processing regulations. Additionally, this VISTA member will work to strengthen ties between local foods producers and area restaurants and retail outlets.

Member Duties : 1. Work closely with Salmon Local Foods Group & partners to implement action plan items. 2. Coordinate educational programming on sustainable agriculture & food preservation as well as other education events/workshops as needed. 3. Community outreach regarding healthy food access, including SNAP outreach support to Lemhi County Farmers Market. 4. Strengthen ties between local producers and area restaurants, outfitters and retail outlets. 5. Organize food safety and value-added food processing training for local producers, restaurants & cottage food start-ups, etc. 6. Recruit & coordinate volunteers to assist with SLFG projects and work days as needed. 7. Develop a record keeping system to track volunteer hours and in-kind donations for all VISTA projects. 8. Work toward sustainability of the existing Lemhi County Gleaning Project. 9. Outreach, communications and fund development support involving social media, blogging, fundraising, grant writing, & events coordination as directed.
