University of Maine at Augusta - Veteran Services
 
 
 
Maine Campus Compact (MCC) VISTA members will be placed on college campuses, where they will work closely with college students, faculty, staff, community partners, and local schools to develop programming focused on improving the educational outcomes of low-income K-12 students. MCC is a coalition of college presidents, united with the goal of increasing civic engagement in higher education. The Veteran Services VISTA will be based at the University of Maine at Augusta (UMA), primarily working at the Bangor campus. UMA transforms the lives of students of every age and background across the state of Maine through access to high-quality distance and on-site education. Through innovation and collaboration, UMA delivers professional and liberal arts programs that prepare students to succeed as engaged citizens, professionals and leaders. UMA will draw upon its expertise and technological infrastructure to develop programming on its campuses and in its recruitment area that will increase access and retention to higher education for low income individuals by providing services focused on improving college aspirations, increasing the belief that college is an option and increasing access to higher education for low income individuals and veterans.

Member Duties : The Veteran Services VISTA will be the liaison between UMA student support service offices, local and state-wide Veteran service providers and UMA Veteran students, many of whom are low income, and their family members to: • Assist the Veteran student groups in completing the process to become fully established as an official student group • Establish a Veterans mentoring/tutoring program • Develop a Financial Literacy program for Veterans and their family members • Establish partnerships with local and state Veterans service providers and develop processes for assisting student low income Veterans to connect to them.
