*Goodwill VISTA* Penquis C.A.P., Inc, Rockland, ME

Penquis is a private, nonprofit organization created as a result of the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 to alleviate and eliminate the causes and conditions of poverty. Its mission is “to assist individuals and families in preventing, reducing, or eliminating poverty in their lives and, through partnerships, to engage the community in addressing economic and social needs.” Penquis primarily serves low- and moderate-income individuals in Penobscot, Piscataquis, and Knox counties, Maine. More than 24,000 individuals annually receive services in the areas of child care, parenting education and support, housing and energy services, housing development, and transportation. www.penquis.org The Community Investors Collaborative is a new collaborative program in Knox County, where more than 4,300 people (11.2%) are living in poverty and more than 11,600 are in low-income families. Often, issues that prevent people from moving out of poverty are neither complicated nor expensive, but issues for which the community has no program or funding to address. The Community Investors initiative will recruit community-minded, philanthropic individuals who are willing to receive weekly emails about people who are facing barriers to moving out of poverty. Community Investors select the requests they wish to support, and make measurable differences in the lives of individuals and families living in or at risk of entering poverty while strengthening the fabric of the community. The Goodwill VISTA Partnership is a statewide AmeriCorps VISTA program that builds capacity and sustainability of nonprofits to reduce poverty in Maine communities through indirect service. VISTA members build capacity in their placement sites through volunteer management, fundraising, marketing, program design, etc. to increase services to individuals living in poverty.
