Harvest Against Hunger Summer Associate NEW Hunger Coalition

Providence North East Washington (NEW) Hunger Coalition unites 25 regional organizations that work towards ending hunger in local communities. One of the founding missions for the Coalition is to increase access to healthy, locally sourced produce for families and individuals in north east Washington. In an effort to achieve this mission the Coalition partnered with Rotary First Harvest to establish its very own Harvest Against Hunger (HAH) program. The VISTA Summer Associate (SA) will work to build partnerships and capacity for the community/food bank gardens, gleaning program and summer feeding program. The SVA will work with community partners to develop systems, workshops, and education to enhance participation and outreach of the gardens. He/she will build a partnership between the summer feeding program and local farmers market to increase the amount of fresh produce students receive, while engaging local growers in efforts to end hunger. The SA will be engaged with the N.E.W. Hunger Coalition to supply locally sourced fresh fruits and vegetables to existing Farm to Food Pantry, Farm to School, and Farm to Community programs, which serve low income and impoverished children and families in rural NE WS. Project Background Harvest Against Hunger, a program of Rotary First Harvest, connects local growers, food banks and volunteers to secure fresh produce for distribution to thousands of people throughout Washington State. HAH finds new and innovative ways to decrease waste of fresh fruits and vegetables and increase the availability of nutritious produce to food bank clients.
