Harvest Against Hunger SVA WSU Ext Jefferson

Gleaning volunteers in Jefferson County deliver food to various programs, including Senior Meals, the YMCA summer kids program, Jefferson Mental Health Services, Dove House Advocacy Services, the Boiler Room, and food banks in Port Townsend, Chimacum, Quilcene and Coyle. 40 percent of food gets wasted in the U.S.A, while one in five kids in Jefferson County doesn’t get enough to eat. Project Background Harvest Against Hunger (HAH), a program of Rotary First Harvest, connects local growers, food banks and volunteers to secure fresh produce for distribution to thousands of people throughout Washington State. HAH finds new and innovative ways to decrease waste of fresh fruits and vegetables and increase the availability of nutritious produce to food bank clients. HAH partners with the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) to place AmeriCorps VISTA members at hunger relief organizations to start or continue existing produce recovery projects. Now in its seventh year, HAH has AmeriCorps VISTA members placed at host sites around Washington State on produce recovery projects. The Summer VISTA Associate program will enhance past and present HAH project host sites by providing individuals who will work in an intensive level of summer service for 10 weeks. The SVAs will work to start and support existing food bank garden or gleaning initiatives. Projects may also focus on strengthening connections with schools, use educational curriculum and summer feeding programs. SVA are allowed to direct service related activities.
