Harvest Against Hunger Summer Associate- EFN Pierce County

Emergency Food Network’s (EFN) mission is “to provide Pierce County with a consistent, diverse and nutritious food supply so that no person goes hungry." For 32 years, EFN has served as Pierce County's nonprofit food distribution center. Mother Earth Farm grows and distributes more than 100,000 pounds of produce per year to Pierce County food banks and meal programs, feeding hungry children fresh, just-picked produce. The Summer Associate’s service will support the goal of breaking the cycle of poverty by increasing Mother Earth Farm’s capacity to grow a wide variety of produce. Food insecure people, especially children, whose food choices are impacted by their lack of resources are more likely to suffer long-term health consequences, which affects schooling and job prospects and can trap them in the cycle of poverty. Together, these programs create a unique system capable of growing, purchasing, storing and distributing food straight to the tables of low-income children and adults. By operating beyond the traditional anti-hunger model, EFN effectively meets both the emergency food and nutritional needs of Pierce County residents. Project Background: Harvest Against Hunger (HAH), a program of Rotary First Harvest, connects local growers, food banks and volunteers to secure fresh produce for distribution to thousands of people throughout Washington State. HAH finds new and innovative ways to decrease waste of fresh fruits and vegetables and increase the availability of nutritious produce to food bank clients. HAH partners with the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) to place AmeriCorps VISTA members at hunger relief organizations to start or continue existing produce recovery projects. Now in its seventh year, HAH currently has AmeriCorps VISTA members placed at host sites around Washington State on produce recovery projects.
