SerVermont - Community Sailing Center STEM Initiative
The CSC mission is to encourage and celebrate the responsible use and long term stewardship of Lake Champlain by fostering educational and recreational opportunities for all members of our community. We connect community members and visitors to Lake Champlain using non-motorized boats, providing participants with an opportunity to learn valuable life lessons that instill a sense of ownership and stewardship for Vermont’s most valuable natural resource- Lake Champlain. We provide programs for low-income individuals and other community members to access Lake Champlain through our Signature Programs: Floating Classrooms, Leader Ship, Women In Wind, and Adaptive Watersports Program. Floating Classrooms serves 5 elementary schools in Burlington’s district and a few neighboring district schools, connecting classroom lessons to lessons learned on the lake and aligning curriculum to their required science standards. Leader Ship serves disadvantaged youth by teaching life skills through the medium of sailing. Women In Wind exclusively serves women and girls by teaching leadership and communication skills through the medium of sailing, while providing the avenue for personal growth and confidence building. The Adaptive Watersports Program partners with Vermont Adaptive and Special Olympics Vermont to provide meaningful lake access to individuals with cognitive and physical disabilities. The VISTA will engage with Signature Program participants on a regular basis and help to expand services by empowering volunteers and strengthening program development and outreach. They will develop on-land lessons with students, manage volunteers, and communicate regularly with program partners. The VISTA is not required to know how to sail, but knowledge of the sport or appreciation for water recreation is great.
