GHCC/ ACTS: People of the Word Coordinator

The Alliance for Community, Teachers and Schools (ACTS) is an organization that provides evidence-based leadership training and development to schools and communities. ACTS has developed and piloted, with Arlington Elementary/Middle School and its community partners, an innovative model of collective literacy development called People of the Word (PotW), a campaign based in shared selection and activation of excellent African American children’s literature. The campaign aims to engage educators and community residents collaboratively in providing children with rich, culturally-grounded literacy experiences. PotW mobilizes members of Baltimore neighborhoods and their local schools to assume shared responsibility for the continuous work of educating children as a collaborative enterprise. This project promotes educational resiliency on individual, family, and community levels through literacy. Children and families become more resilient in encountering the challenges of urban schooling as they delve together into the work of developing expressive capacities – sharing a deeper understanding of their history, themselves, and the world. PotW engages all members of a school community – educators, students, parents, program partners, and community residents – in the active exploration of reading, writing, artistic expression, history, and culture. This position is sponsored by Greater Homewood Community Corporation (GHCC) in Baltimore, MD; and the VISTA member will serve with POW in Baltimore, MD. GHCC serves as the VISTA Project Sponsor to more than 20 nonprofit, government, and community organizations throughout Baltimore City and Maryland. Established in 1969 to help neighborhoods become safer, better places to live, GHCC's mission is to build and strengthen vibrant urban communities. GHCC will provide support to PotW and the VISTA member throughout the year, including recruitment, training, professional development opportunities, and resources.
