GHCC/Youth Empowered Society

Founded and run by formerly homeless youth and their allies, the Youth Empowered Society (YES) works to end homelessness in Baltimore by supporting currently/formerly homeless youth to become leaders in our community and by providing desperately needed, direct services to homeless youth. YES Drop-In Center is a safe space for youth who are homeless and between the ages of 14-25. YES meets youths’ basic needs and works to establish supportive relationships with the youth that are the basis for connections to long-term resources and opportunities. YES is seeking a VISTA volunteer to continue the development of our Training and Education Arm, whereby YES staff and youth leaders educate professionals in the lived experience, best practices, and service navigation tools for working with homeless youth, and build out our volunteer program. The VISTA volunteer would continue the project started by the FY 2015 VISTA volunteer by supporting the ongoing leadership development of YES’s youth leaders, the YES Valedictorians; continue to assist YES staff to develop our training curricula; and coordinate trainings; and build on the work of the previous VISTA’s and YES staff to concretize a volunteer program at YES. This position is sponsored by Greater Homewood Community Corporation (GHCC) in Baltimore, MD; and the VISTA member will serve with YES in Baltimore, MD. GHCC serves as the VISTA Project Sponsor to more than 20 nonprofit, government, and community organizations throughout Baltimore City and Maryland. Established in 1969 to help neighborhoods become safer, better places to live, GHCC's mission is to build and strengthen vibrant urban communities. GHCC will provide support to YES and the VISTA member throughout the year, including recruitment, training, professional development opportunities, and resources.
