GHCC/AIRS-City Steps

The AIRS City Steps Youth Housing Program provides supportive scattered site housing to 135 homeless and unstably housed youth ages 18-24 in Baltimore City. The youth served in this program are classified as low income with incomes well below the 30% average median income line. The demographics of the youth we serve reveal that 70% have a high school diploma or GED; 45% are employed with average incomes of $15,000 per year; those who are in school or job training programs with no regular income receive a maximum of $194 of food stamps per month. In Baltimore more than a third of Baltimore neighborhoods don’t have ready access to healthy foods, leaving one in five residents to reply on high-fat, high-calorie meals from corner stores and carryout restaurants. AIRS/City Steps seeks a VISTA to sustain a viable and functional food pantry to meet the needs of formerly homeless youth lacking resources and education necessary to obtain nutritious meals. The pantry program will assist in alleviating the high cost of food; this will directly impact the economic potential of our young residents. The Pantry program will also serve as a mechanism to close the gap of travel to receive fresh and non-perishable foods. This position is sponsored by Greater Homewood Community Corporation (GHCC) in Baltimore, MD; and the VISTA member will serve with AIRS/City Steps in Baltimore City, MD. GHCC serves as the VISTA Project Sponsor to more than 20 nonprofit, government, and community organizations throughout Baltimore City and Maryland. Established in 1969 to help neighborhoods become safer, better places to live, GHCC's mission is to build and strengthen vibrant urban communities. GHCC will provide support to AIRS/City Steps and the VISTA member throughout the year, including recruitment, training, professional development opportunities, and resources.
