GHCC/Neighborhood Design Center

The Neighborhood Design Center (NDC) provides pro bono planning, conceptual design, and community engagement services. Since 1968, NDC has worked on over 2000 community planning projects for community organizations, local governments, and non-profits that wish to initiate architectural, landscape architecture, or other design projects to ultimately reduce poverty in Baltimore City and the surrounding area. These conceptual design projects have included designs for new community centers, produce gardens, and neighborhood master plans. Many of our projects have resulted in neighborhood change and have forged stronger communities even when project implementation has foundered. However, NDC has not consistently tracked whether projects have been implemented, what short and long term community investments have resulted from our plans, and the change in perception of their neighborhood before and after NDC partnership. A lack of data is severely limiting our access to additional funding. Aside from the work of our former VISTA, there is no unified categorization, mapping, or measurement of our entire body or large portion of our past work. NDC requests a VISTA to continue to investigate a selection of our past community planning projects and further analyze, interpret, and communicate their findings for use both internally and externally. This position is sponsored by Greater Homewood Community Corporation (GHCC) in Baltimore, MD; and the VISTA member will serve with Neighborhood Design Center in Baltimore, MD. GHCC serves as the VISTA Project Sponsor to more than 20 nonprofit, government, and community organizations throughout Baltimore City and Maryland. Established in 1969 to help neighborhoods become safer, better places to live, GHCC's mission is to build and strengthen vibrant urban communities. GHCC will provide support to NDC and the VISTA member throughout the year, including recruitment, training, professional development opportunities, and resources.
