WSU VISTA Fellow - CIS Partnership Development Coordinator

Communities In Schools(CIS) of Wichita/Sedgwick County is 501(c)(3)non-profit organization working in partnership with local school districts to increase high school graduation rates in our community.Research has shown that earning power increases if youth achieve a high school diploma, and through the support of Communities in School, students have a higher chance of graduating. Communities in Schools’ efforts prevent potential falls into poverty and encourages overall economic growth by providing educated citizens into the workforce. The mission of CIS is to surround students with a community of support to empower them toward staying in school. CIS Site Coordinators work directly within the Wichita/ Sedgwick County schools, often meeting daily with students and teachers to decrease dropout rates, increase graduation rates, and promote math and literacy proficiency. Communities in Schools partner with community resources to solve daily challenges on the students’ behalf by providing such supports as an alarm clock, an eye examination, or a pair of shoes. Communities In Schools take action to prevent drop outs and improve academic performance by working within high-risk schools, assessing and placing at-risk students in the appropriate level of service, and designing each level of service for the most impact.
