2017-2018 Community Outreach Coordinator

The AmeriCorps*VISTA member at School for Community Learning will work directly with all stakeholders in our school including the board of directors, school administration, teachers, students and families. We are seeking motivated self-starters with a strong commitment to social and educational equity. Candidates should have some experience with community engagement and strong writing skills. The School for Community Learning is a small, independent school located in Indianapolis, IN. We have a non-traditional, progressive school model. We emphasize socially minded education and sustainable practices. Our students (kindergarten through 8th grade) learn to be critical thinkers about the issues that impact their communities, and decide how they want to impact these issues. They do all of this while receiving a quality education. Our learning community thrives on the gifts, talents, and capabilities that our families, students and staff bring to school each day. We believe strongly that both our similarities and our differences help forge a strong community. Our school is economically and racially diverse. 86% of our families live at or below the federal poverty line. Our tuition structure helps families across socio-economic groups attend our school, but also makes significant fundraising a necessity. Our VISTA member will build on community outreach efforts that have been started and help develop new partnerships. This person will also help with fundraising and possibly grant writing. A major focus of this VISTA year of service will be ensuring that sustainable structures and systems are in place for the community initiatives that have been started over the last two years.
