VISTA Pantry Capacity Consultant

This is the 3rd year of a 3-year project; it is the assess, refine, and roll it out phase. Three VISTA members will work remotely, living and working in each of our three rural zones in WNC (Western Zone: Clay, Cherokee, Graham, Macon, Jackson, and Swain Counties; Central Zone: Haywood, Transylvania, Henderson, and Polk Counties; Eastern Zone: Madison, Yancey, Mitchell, Avery, and McDowell Counties.) VISTA members begin their service with an in-depth orientation and training phase at MANNA FoodBank in Asheville. Understanding the operations of the food bank and all the work from the previous years is essential for success in year 3, so this phase is given special emphasis. MANNA will help establish an office location for each member in their Zone. Although most of the work is field-based, the project supervisor will provide strong support and guidance from Asheville. Additionally, members will be supported by and working closely with the Outreach Coordinator (staff) in their Zone. After orientation and training, each member will conduct a formal assessment (guided interview) of the project successes with the select group of pantries targeted in previous project years. Next, members will assist in refining and editing the toolkits that have been developed, and then carry that work on to more partner pantries in our network. A big component of this year will be taking stock of all that we’ve learned from this pilot project and shaping MANNA’s next phase of capacity work with partners. Applicants should be passionate about community-based solutions to ending hunger. The positions are field-based, so self-motivation and good communication skills are essential. A cultural understanding of the Appalachian region is preferred. Beyond just the project goals, MANNA strives to give our VISTA members opportunities for training in principles of nonprofit management , personal growth, and networking within the nonprofit community of WNC.
