United Way of the Florida Keys Community Engagement VISTA

Monroe County, Florida is home to nearly 75,000 permanent residents and many, many more visitors to the United States’ Caribbean community of the Florida Keys. For many reasons, including the geography and popularity as a tourist destination, however, the cost of living is extremely high here. Among the permanent residents, many struggle to meet their family’s basic needs. 12% of the population exists at or below the federal poverty line, and 36% are struggling to get by as “Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed” (ALICE). According to a study by Rutgers University and a consortium of the United Ways of Florida, contributing to this struggle is the fact that housing affordability is extremely difficult and community support is “poor.” One implication of these inadequacies is that families may experience a lack of childcare access – in part because there are so few after-school providers in the community - or awareness for enriching out-of-school time for their young children. United Way of the Florida Keys AmeriCorps VISTA member will explore solutions to meet the need of families struggling with enriching childcare, particularly during the summer months. This project will increase community awareness and access to out-of-school time resources for families, in part by leveraging volunteers during after-school programs, to set young children on the path to educational success early. The VISTA will help increase the visibility and profile in the community of the UWFK. In doing so, they will help increase our ability to raise and leverage dollars and serve the community.

Member Duties : The AmeriCorps VISTA member serving in the Florida Keys will be an ambassador for our United Way's growing Community Impact work. This individual will help us meet the needs of the "ALICE" (Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) population in our community with regard to children in early learning and out of school time environments, and will help amplify that message to the community. On a broad level, they will expand the community's knowledge of United Way's impact in the community both as a funder and more importantly, a convener of conversation and facilitator of solutions. Additionally, the VISTA will help us continue to utilize technology to maximize our impact, given the unique and challenging geography of our community. The potential impact of this position will hopefully be felt in a lasting way in the community for many years after the VISTA's service is complete.
