GHCC/Crossroads Community Food Network

At Crossroads Community Food Network (Crossroads), we are entering our 9th year of running a successful, seasonal farmers market that aims to combat hunger and increase community food security through innovative models mutually supportive of those who produce food and those who consume it. Crossroads Farmers Market was the first in Maryland to accept federal nutrition benefits, and the first in the country to launch a financial incentive program to match federal assistance with private dollars (“Fresh Checks”). When shopping at Crossroads Farmers Market, Fresh Checks participants receive dollar-value coupons that match the amount spent in federal nutrition benefits (including SNAP and WIC) towards the purchase of locally grown, farm-fresh food. Not only does the Crossroads Fresh Checks program increase the consumption of healthy produce by participating community members, it also supports the viability of small and midsize farms by creating new revenue streams. The VISTA member will serve as the central coordinator to establish new community connections and systems for community giving and involvement, with the goal of creating long-term sustainability for our organization. The VISTA member will work closely with our Executive Director, Programs Manager, and Board of Directors to identify new funding sources and create internal systems for annual events and fundraising asks. This position is sponsored by Greater Homewood Community Corporation (GHCC) in Baltimore, MD and the VISTA member will serve at the Crossroads Community Food Network in Takoma Park, MD. GHCC sponsors more than 20 VISTA members at various nonprofit, government, and community organizations located throughout Maryland. Established in 1969 to help neighborhoods become safer, better places to live, GHCC's mission is to build and strengthen vibrant urban communities. GHCC provides monthly professional development opportunities and the support of a VISTA Leader.

Member Duties : A VISTA Member will increase our organization’s capacity and will: 1)Develop new, long-term, and diverse community-based fundraising initiatives; 2)Further develop and enhance a volunteer and internship program; 3)Assist with volunteer and intern recruitment, evaluation, and training; 4)Develop key organizational communications pieces (email newsletter templates, infographics, social media content, website content, and improved educational handouts).
