GHCC/ St. Ambrose Housing Aid Center

St. Ambrose Housing Aid Center, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit whose mission is to create, preserve, and maintain equal housing opportunities for low-income residents in Baltimore City, as well as encouraging and supporting strong and diverse neighborhoods. Since 1968, the agency has provided direct housing services to over 110,000 residents. The programs at St. Ambrose offer rental properties and property management, real estate development of rehabilitated homes, pre-purchase counseling services, foreclosure prevention counseling services, home-sharing, and free or very low cost legal services. St. Ambrose is an organization rooted in the nation’s civil rights era. National and local conditions in the wake of the Great Recession have made the mission of St. Ambrose and the needs for its services as important and as relevant as ever. Today, the typical client St. Ambrose serves is much more likely to be unemployed or underemployed, earning less money, and facing income insecurity. With a foundation of work already laid out by this year’s previous VISTA, St. Ambrose hopes to engage another VISTA member to assist with the ongoing effort of expanding and perfecting a financial education curriculum. This position is sponsored by Greater Homewood Community Corporation (GHCC) in Baltimore, MD; and the VISTA member will serve with St. Ambrose Housing Aid Center in Baltimore, MD. GHCC serves as the VISTA Project Sponsor to more than 20 nonprofit, government, and community organizations throughout Baltimore City and Maryland. Established in 1969 to help neighborhoods become safer, better places to live, GHCC's mission is to build and strengthen vibrant urban communities. GHCC will provide support to St. Ambrose and the VISTA member throughout the year, including recruitment, training, professional development opportunities, and resources.
