GHCC/ My Sister's Circle Program Coordinator

For the past 14 years, My Sister’s Circle (MSC) has connected at-risk girls in Baltimore with positive role models, provided new and enriching opportunities and, ultimately, improved the quality of life of more than 130 young women. Without this level of engagement and long-term intervention, these girls often lack any vision of a professional, independent future. With the strong network of support provided by MSC, they are empowered to determine their own goals and equipped with the tools needed to achieve them. MSC works to better educate and prepare young women for college and/or professional careers, ultimately leading to self-sustainability. Many of MSC students come from households facing stressors of unemployment, poverty, lack of education and job placement skills, and, constant threats of homelessness due to economic insecurity. Too many of MSC’s students are “getting lost” in the transition to middle school; as a result, MSC must serve as a stronger presence within its partner/feeder school(s). The overall goal of this proposed project is to support MSC in year-two of its after-school pilot program at Henderson-Hopkins Elementary/Middle School in east Baltimore. This will include implementing a new curriculum for seventh grade girls and implementing and revising, when necessary, the current sixth grade curriculum. This position is sponsored by Greater Homewood Community Corporation (GHCC) in Baltimore, MD; and the VISTA member will serve with MSC in Baltimore, MD. GHCC serves as the VISTA Project Sponsor to more than 20 nonprofit, government, and community organizations throughout Baltimore City and Maryland. Established in 1969 to help neighborhoods become safer, better places to live, GHCC's mission is to build and strengthen vibrant urban communities. GHCC will provide support to MSC and the VISTA member throughout the year, including recruitment, training, professional development opportunities, and resources.
