SPPL (Adaptive Programs) -- St. Paul VISTA Program

The mission of the Saint Paul Public Library is to connect the people of Saint Paul with the imperative and the joy of learning through a lifetime. We do this by advancing Saint Paul's Learning Our goal for this VISTA project is to create and disseminate community and parent surveys to help determine which programs, services, and resources are of the greatest interest and need to teens and young adults with autism and other developmental disabilities and their families and to use this information to determine which programs the library should take on. It will also help us build support and audiences for our programs. We currently offer programs that are open to all, sometimes limited by age or by interest and we offer accommodations when requested in advance. While these efforts are admirable and often successful, we will have an even greater impact when we reach out directly to these youth and find out what is of importance. In making these connections we can build on the experiences and expertise of the youth themselves, their families and their support networks (schools, advocacy groups, etc.) to create resources like a libguide and to create program models that will be effective and engaging. We can also use these contacts to help advise us, along with literature reviews, on training and awareness programs for staff and to recruit potential volunteers to help with future programs and services. **This VISTA position is sponsored by the Saint Paul VISTA Program. Hosted in Mayor Chris Coleman's Office, the Saint Paul VISTA Program comprises a city-wide cohort of individuals -- placed at community organizations and schools -- dedicated to shaping the educational landscape for youth and families in Saint Paul.**
