YouthLink - GED Program Revitalization Project - (MLC)

YouthLink is a recognized leader for our work to build pathways of opportunity for homeless youth 16 – 23. Our youth-focused team provides innovative, evidence-based services that guide youth on a holistic level toward futures of education, employment, health and wellness, and housing stability. Since 2011 YouthLink has been home to the Youth Opportunity Center (YOC), a collaborative center that is the first of its kind in the nation, where over 30 community partners make vital resources available onsite to provide efficient and effective interventions and strategies for youth in crisis. VISTA will be assisting YouthLink's Education Navigator in enhancing the organization's current high school equivalency (GED) program, which provides individual tutoring and classroom education with the goal of transitioning into a GED testing site. VISTA will work collaboratively with the Minnesota Literacy Council and the GED Testing Service to recruit and train tutors, test new educational materials related to the new online practice testing system, and market the GED school to other youth-serving agencies. As a result of the VISTA project's capacity-related improvements, YouthLink's onsite GED program will be able to help hundreds of young people take the first step toward achieving long-term educational goals, remove significant barriers to a more self-reliant adulthood, and establish a foundation from which they can gain the skills, knowledge, and resources needed to permanently overcome homelessness. VISTA will gain skills in program development, coordination of systems, capacity building, recruiting/training volunteers, collaboration, and marketing. We provide breakfast, lunch, and dinner to the youth we serve; staff are also able to eat the meals. YouthLink can contribute $45 towards phone bill. *This position is part of MN Literacy Council's AmeriCorps VISTA cohort (http://mnliteracy.org/americorps-vista).
