Two Northwest Lower Michigan Regional Americorps VISTA Project positions are available, one with the Traverse Bay Intermediate School District’s Farm to School Initiative, and the other in partnership between the TBAISD and the Inland Seas Education Association. VISTA’s will provide capacity building and sustainability support to these organizations. These position are located in beautiful northwest lower Michigan, and the project is based out of Traverse City. Apply early! Ideal candidates for the Grand Vision to Grand Action AmeriCorps VISTA project are interviewed and accepted on a rolling basis. The TBAISD Farm to School Program is a collaboration with the Michigan Land Use Institute to create and implement curriculum, school gardens, and procurement of local and regional food products throughout the region. The value of these elements are to help students eat more healthy foods, as it will have a positive effect on their ability to concentrate and learn. Other values include being good stewards of the environment and teaching those skills and strategies to carry into their lifetime. For curriculum, a focus is on creating K-5 farm to school and school garden units with alignment to the Common Core State Standards and integration of other subject areas. Learn more here: www.mlui.org/food-farming/projects/farm-to-school . Inland Seas Education Association is a non-profit made up of scientists, sailors, and educators dedicated to teaching young people and adults about aquatic sciences, encouraging academic interest in science, and inspiring active stewardship of the Great Lakes. ISEA partners with schools from all around Michigan and neighboring states. Every year, as many as 5,000 students sail and learn about the Great Lakes aboard ISEA's science-lab equipped “Schoolships”—like our 77 foot schooner, Inland Seas.
