Maryland-DC Campus Compact - Garrett College

Providing food security through grocery assistance to Garrett College faculty, staff, and students is the goal of the Garrett College Food Pantry. With donations from our college community and partnership with outside agencies, the goal is to provide basic groceries (perishable and non-perishable) to persons in need. The Garrett grocery assistance program will help low-income study more and stay more focused on academic success.Through the educational programs first-generation students will gain skills in time management and personal finance management. Most Garrett students receive free or reduced meals in public schools (K-12). Graduating from high school does not change the needs of many of our students and families. By participating in our Food Pantry program, we will have an opportunity to introduce our clients to additional programs and services. Workshops that will be provided to our community include, but are not limited to, financial literacy, decision making, leadership, wellness and nutrition, and many others. We anticipate that this project will be sustainable within 3 years. Developing workshops, policies, procedures, and partnerships with additional outside agencies will be the goal of the AmeriCorps MDCCC-VISTA member who will be managing this effort. Outcomes will include a sustainable food pantry program on campus at Garrett College.
