MDCC Campus Compact - Georgetown University STEM Afterschool

Georgetown University’s Center for Social Justice Research, Teaching and Service (CSJ) proposes a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) engagement project. This program is in response to multiple requests from current DCPS partners, school principals that have interest in becoming partners, and a review of the low proficiency of DC Comprehensive Assessment System (CAS) math scores at these schools. CSJ works in multiple DCPS elementary schools in Wards 1 and 7, all of which have a majority of students whose families are low-income and qualify for free and reduced lunch. The STEM engagement project will provide Science and Math (STEM) tutoring, field trips, college and career programming, and connections with GU STEM faculty and programs to address the needs of these underserved students. GU students will provide the one-to-one tutoring, and the MDCCC AmeriCorps VISTA will provide significant coordination and programmatic and research capacity to the STEM engagement programs that will lead to sustained, long-term educational interventions in STEM in these partner schools. CSJ’s MDCCC AmeriCorps VISTA will research STEM tutoring curricula and practices, STEM concepts infusion within other tutoring activities, coordinate the necessary training of GU students to perform effectively with the new materials, and develop regular, holistic activities in STEM engagement. At the end of the three-year MDCCC AmeriCorps VISTA term, Georgetown University will have a program in-place at nine DCPS elementary schools, serving over 150 elementary school students each year. The program will provide significant STEM engagement among Georgetown University faculty, staff, and students with DCPS elementary schools. This program will draw from best practices and include multiple tutoring and experiential learning activities.
