Ohio Campus Compact Connect2Complete-University of Toledo

The Ohio Campus Compact Connect2Complete program (C2C) AmeriCorps VISTA project addresses the critical needs of college students from the lowest socioeconomic status who often experience significant barriers in trying to graduate from college and is designed to improve college success and completion. More Ohioans from low-income backgrounds are enrolling in postsecondary education with the goal of preparing for jobs that provide access to middle-class wages and move them out of poverty. Unfortunately, too few students succeed. There are many reasons for this; first-generation college students tend to be less informed about the processes of preparing for college and often lack the academic skills to do college level work upon enrolling. This insufficient "college knowledge" and lack of academic readiness, combined with the typical barriers faced by other underserved students--family and work obligations, and low financial resources often lead to students dropping out of college before degree completion. The C2C program specifically addresses Pell Grant-eligible students and connects them with Peer Advocates that share community and college resources and involve them in community engagement activities. The C2C program is proven to improve college persistence, success, and graduation rates.

Member Duties : The C2C VISTA member at University of Toledo (UT) will collaborate with campus community members to identify ways of sustaining this peer-to-peer mentoring and civic engagement retention program in its second year. The most recent numbers show UT with a four-year graduation rate of 21.69% and approximately 14,756 Pell-eligible students on campus. The VISTA member will identify areas of improvement and expansion in the existing program and develop a recruitment and outreach plan to increase the number of student and faculty participants. The VISTA member will utilize data assessment to showcase program accomplishment and partner with campus and community stakeholders. It is expected that this VISTA will be comfortable working with a range of staff, faculty, and students. As an Ohio Campus Compact VISTA, you will gain experience in program development and higher education skill sets.
