Maryland-DC Campus Compact - Hood College-Prosperity Center

The Maryland-DC Campus Compact (MDCCC) is a non-profit membership association of public, private, 2- and 4-year colleges and universities. MDCCC AmeriCorps VISTAs (www.mdccc.org) placed at higher education institutions across the Maryland-DC region encourage and promote the expansion of service and quality campus-community partnerships. The MDCCC AmeriCorps VISTA at Hood College will work at United Way within their Prosperity Center. The Prosperity Center is a collaborative partnership with an existing network of educational institutions, nonprofit service providers, businesses, government, and supplements existing service provision with additional resources, and tracks and measures the progress of families as they improve their financial stability. This long term approach provides income support, incentivizes savings with a 3:1 match, focuses on behavioral spending habits, and helps families obtain self-sustaining income and assets such as homeownership, tuition for higher education, and small business start-up. The Prosperity Center launched the first phase of this continuum of service in Spring 2014 to 350 households through free tax preparation. The Center is now piloting more in-depth services, including Individual Development Accounts, Financial Literacy Forums, Credit Counseling, and wealth coaching.
